In Brazil, various exotic(奇异的) birds are smuggled(偷运) out of the country 。A baby macaw(金刚鹦鹉) falls out of a truck and is found by a little girl named Linda Gunderson, who names him Blu. Highly domesticated(驯养) and unable to fly, Blu is ridiculed(嘲笑) frequently(频繁地) by the Canada geese .One day, ornithologist(鸟类学者) Túlio Monteiro invites Blu and Linda to Rio de Janeiro on the condition that Blu, who is the last male of his species, mates with a female macaw

Linda accepts Túlio‘s invitation and they fly to Rio, where Blu meets a red-crested cardinal(红衣凤头鸟) named Pedro and his yellow canary(金丝雀) friend Nico. At Túlio’s aviary(鸟类饲养场), Blu meets Jewel, a fiercely(激烈地) independent(独立的) Spix‘s macaw(斯比克斯金刚鹦鹉) longing to flee into the wilderness.

The macaws are captured（俘获） by Fernando, an orphaned(孤儿) boy, and a cockatoo（美冠鹦鹉） named Nigel, both of whom work for a group of smugglers led by Marcel, who wants to leave the country as soon as possible to secure(使安全;担保) a black market deal（黑市交易）

Nigel tells the macaws that he desires(渴望) to exact(要求;苛求) revenge on “pretty birds” after his role（角色） on a television program had been ruined（破坏，毁灭） by one. However, because of Blu is familiarity(熟悉;通晓) with cages（笼子）, they flee into the jungle([热带]丛林).

Fernando遇到了 Linda 和 Túlio，并帮助他们去找Blu,与此同时，Blu和Jewel遇到了Rafael(一只巨嘴鸟)，他提议带他们去找他的朋友斗牛犬Luiz帮他们解除他们脚上的链子。
